Welcoming a new member in my pocket.

Though I never officially welcomed the new iPhone 32GB 3Gs, I already write something about it while back. now I am welcoming the blackberry 9700 aka Onyx. Not to replace my iPhone but to complement it.

The main stay in my pocket is 32GB 3Gs, the 9700 onyx and the small, tiny dual mode on GSM-CDMA nexian.

You probably wonder how big is my pouch. I use one of those belt pocket, finally I found the one without leather, made off neoprene type of material and it fits 9700 and the 3Gs.

The 16GB 3G will stay for my love one.

Device junky

Now I feel like a device junky. To answer a client request, that I shoud get a blackberry coz they would like to send me bbm, finally I got one.

Searching for cheap one, coz i only use this for BBM, damn, I hate myself for getting this one.

Still loving my 32gb 3Gs, but the battery on this thing is last longer than the iphone.

When are they going to put a tiny nuclear reactor on iphone?

Eventhough I bought it for about $370, still its money going to the drain.

I call it $370 chatting device, since I can turn on my ym all day long

Iphone 3Gs 32 GB

For those who want to upgrade their 3G iphone to 3Gs version here is some consideration you want to ask your self.

1. Do you need better processor?
2. do you need compass?
3. Do you need more storage?

As far as I know, having 3G 16GB dan 3GS 32GB at the same time, both are almost identical if both are using 3.0 firmware.

In my case in 3GS, mms feature still unstable, but most likely this is due to my provider.

Most apps I used
- GoodReader
- Compass
- Calculator
- Mail
- Voice memo
- Notes
- Maps

The downside of the 3GS and inherited from the original 3G version is THE BATTERY.
I guess you need to put a nuclear reactor to keep this thing going and going and going.
3G signal just suck you battery dry in hours. my experience less than 5 hours.

I am a heavy user of cellphone , my average talk time is 3-5 hours a day. luckly I now life in a place where YOU DON'T have to pay if you receive a phone call!!!

Iphone 3G 16GB All in one again

Finally I got it all work out. My previous post about iphone first generation has come back to haunt me. All because the firmware of the original iphone that has not been build as 'standard' cellular phone.
so I tried the 3G version. I unlocked it using yellowsn0w using firmware 2.2.
a couple days ago I accidentally upgrade my iphone to firmware 3.0.1 and the phone was locked again. I know that 3.0 can do a lot of functionality that a regular cell phone can do. the additional functionality is;

-Forward sms
-copy/paste
-MMS
-tethering internet
-voice recorder
-import contact from sim

above feature was also available from third party vendor. but I like the one from the firmware 3.0

The unlocking process takes about 30 minutes if you have all components correctly.

now I have all feature that I need from a phone.

I need to get the software that can edit office file and send it using email from my iphone....

phieeewww I thought I was going to have the most expensive paper holder

Its arrived 3 days ago with all new in box from amazon. I originally want to like iPhone, but after using it for a 2 weeks I decided that that device did not satisfy me. So I return it and after a long time research I set my mind to get this N800. After I use it for 3 days, I decide to keep this and make this as mobile device.

I will try to compare this device with iPhone, although it is not actually apple to apple comparable. But for me iPhone, N800(plus a 3G phone) and Nokia e90 are the devices that might suit for my need. Because the price of e90 is almost the same as getting a UMPC so I did not included in my decision (I have to fill bankruptcy if I got those)
May I re-iterate what I need from my mobile device.
- Affordable
- large screen
- Internet connection
- multimedia (music/movie/picture player)
- streaming media (flash etc)
- games
- pdf reader
- doc reader
- text reader
- Upgradeable

So Finally I return it last night. Not too much trouble but if you probably has to find apple store that close to att store. other wise you are out of network until you find att store to give you your new sim card and activate it.
The process
- Return your iphone along with the sim card. btw I can use iphone sim card in triple band and up cell phone. I just can not use the data service on it. Tried with Sony ericsson K700i and Blackberry 8800.
- Your iPhone sim card will be burned
- You have to go to att store to get new sim card, this may cost you
- att will activate your sim card using your old number

after all that you can change your feature again in att online.

Moving contacts from Sony Ericsson to iPhone

Now I thought I can use bluetooth to share my contact. But unfortunately iPhone bluetooth 2.0 is strictly for headset. I can not pair it with my PC nor My nokia nor my sony ericsson.

So to move this 500 something contacts I have to follow below method.

1. Get fma and install it. fma is a nice little apps that sync your sony ericsson phone with your PC.
2. sync your phone with fma
3. select all your contacts and export it to csv file

4. import all your contact to outlook.
5. Now you can sync your iPhone with outlook using iTunes

I believe there is an easier way using iSync, but I have not try it yet.

iPhone SUCKS as a phone....business phone

Just got it last week and play a lot since with it. And I activate the thing right away. But found out several things that really disappoint me. I list all the thing that is good and bad for me to use this "new technology". For the price I should be able to do more.
8Gb iPhone = $600
8Gb iPod = $250

With $350 I can do more than iPhone, but without nice and sleek navigation iPhone has and large screen.
I will add more and more in the list as I am using it.

The Good

- Touchable , large , easy view screen
- Nice menu animation
- The only phone I know out there with this kind of touch screen and navigation
- Plays media so well and Youtube integration is kick ass.
- Maps application is good (google you rock!!), I wish it had 3G, so the map loads faster
- Easy navigation
- Email client is good. yahoo mail, gmail, aol, mac and pop3
- I can open links , send email to email address, make a call from a phone number thats in email body, then create contact from them
-Widescreen iPod video

The Bad

- NO YOU CAN NOT USE IT WITH OTHER SIM CARD.

- iPhone BLUETOOTH 2.0 ARE SUCKS, I hate it so much that I am thinking to return this next week. No file transfer via bluetooth to any device, so it is strickly for bluetooth headset. How can you share that nice picture in your iPhone (or your MP3:) )? By email only?

- I can not send/share contact via anything wireless. I have not try it with iSync. but thats out of the question, why should I not be able to send my card to my partner using bluetooth or SMS, this should be default function for any modern phone.

- NO MMS

- No games (hopefully they will add later), but I can play online games.

- I can not send SMS to several recipient. This kinda sucks since I usually sent invitation via sms to tenth of people (Not anyone check their email every one hour, but they definitely check their SMS as it comes).
- First when I got the iPhone I was thinking, how to move my contacts. NO iPHONE CAN NOT DO IT (transfer your contacts) VIA YOUR SIM CARD. There is just no option available to read your sim card info, maybe it will in the future. there is other easier method (than retyping hundreds of contacts) I wrote in another post

The Ugly

- Very berry slow edge compare to 3G, but usable
- Edge network will not allow you to download email or use internet while you are on the phone simultaneously :(
- No text viewer, no file browser. I WANT FILE BROWSER. if only I can or I know how to browse file using safari inside iphone.
- it has note pad or something like that, but only work for iPhone, I can not open text only file.
- Can't use it as modem ..... maybe later this is possible
- No flash, even my old Sony Ericsson k700i has something to help the lighting situation.
- No encryption
- No Contact search
- Can not receive sms vcard
- Can not copy/paste text from email
- speed : not so fast either. when I tried to delete several message in my inbox continuously its keeps thinking for a while after 2-3 message.
- btw you can not select multiple message and click process (delete) once, instead you do choose-delete,choose-delete,choose-delete and so on until your thumb numb, if you want to empty your iPhone inbox. Not very intuitive.

Then again to use this on your next trip around US is very useful and easy on your eyes with those larger than average screen. And most of the downside probably will be to be updated by apple with patches

This is a nice phone but its not my version of all device in one phone
sorry for the not so good image quality. But this iPhone image quality is just so-so also.

For people who needs a cool factor maybe this is their phone, but if iPhone can come close with the functionality of Nokia e90, I will keep it.
Maybe in the future when it becomes more mature(All my wish list granted), I will pick one up again.

I like most of the feature this case has, but mostly because of the 600W power supply.

I have to warn you that the door panel of this case is very flimsy. One of the pin that hold the door is broken, so it becomes unusable.

Why don't they just use that door mechanic found in cooler master case?

Good:
- Big modular power supply
- Drives is hidden from user, good for HTPC
- ergonomic design
- Good cooling

Bad:
- Flimsy plastic door
- only 1 PCI-E connector
- The door design looks cheap

crontab gone and can not be added

This morning I was in the PANICCCCC state.. actually not realy :P

My automate processes not processing. My crontab is not working. when I try to add my crontab its not updated. I add command but it could not be saved. what is going on? is the crontab coruppted?

So I cheack the log. I found out that my log partition is full to the fullest.

Watch out how you set up your log partition if you want to record whatever you want to record for activity. sometimes your log become so large.

10GB is not enough for me...... :(

delete the particular log and its magically working again. but still I have to enter all my process again in the crontab

Replication of Mysql 5.0 Using SSL

This is developed using master and slave mysql 5.0.26 server on RHEL 4. The Mysql was the binary build from http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/5.0.html.

I will go back and forth between master server and client server, so It is a good idea to set up vncserver or SSH in both server.

First install mysql server, client, Shared libraries, Shared compatibility libraries,Headers and libraries using rpm.

This blog is for replication, so I will not explain to you in depth on how to install mysql.

Now consider that all mysql installation for master and client server went well. we go to master server.

By default SSL is not enable, but included in mysql 5. how to check:

mysql>SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'have_openssl';

You either get 'YES' or 'DISABLED', if you get DISABLED then you will need to configure this. explain later below.

The first part of this blog, I am going to document the replication without SSL support. This is good enough if your servers is in the same room and you just want to replicate. and the second part is when you want more secure connection between your servers, i.e. your Master server is on your headquarter and you want to put the slave in another location in your WAN.

Setting Replication no SSL

I use the manual on how to set up the replication from

Setting in Master server (State of server: not online)

Key point not to be overlooked;

* When I set this one both server are not online, meaning only root access is allowed. Just to make sure that no boady change anything when we setup this for the first time

* setting up the user in master for replication only. this is to make sure that this account will only be use for replication only
in master:
mysql> GRANT REPLICATION SLAVE ON *.* TO 'replication_user'@'your.client.domain' IDENTIFIED BY 'your_slave_user_password';

if you want to force using ssl (additional security feature) use this

mysql> GRANT REPLICATION SLAVE ON *.* TO 'secure_replication_user'@'your.client.domain' IDENTIFIED BY 'your_slave_user_password' require SSL;

* flush the table to make sure that every changes in implemented

mysql> FLUSH TABLES WITH READ LOCK;

I add read lock just to make sure that no body accssing this server while I am configuring.

* Capture the master data and duplicate the data in master to client server. this is important so the client has the exact data as in master for innitial setup. You have 2 choice on how to do this.
You maybe want to skip the mysql table whne you do both method, if you have different user table of different version of mysql
1. Using mysqldump, to dump all databases you have in your master and run the result in client.

in master:

shell>mysqldump -u root -p > master_data_dump.sql

Considering that you don't have the same database name in client as in master server
ftp or transfer with your own method the master_data_dump.sql to client server

in client:

shell>cd /path/to/dir/of/file/above
shell>mysql -u root -p
shell>source master_data_dump.sql

or do

shell> mysql -u root -p < master_data_dump.sql

waiiittt... until... its finish......

if no error occur, now you have the same data in client as in master. I find this is the safest way of porting innodb tables from master to client

2. make a binary snapshot. I am using tar to do the binary snapshot (archive) of mysql data directory. You also don't need to include any log files in the archive, or the master.info or relay-log.info files.

in master:

shell> cd /path/to/mysql/data/dir
shell> tar -cvf /tmp/mysql-snapshot.tar .

The above command will archive everyhting in mysql data directory. use this instead if you want to include only 1 database

shell> tar -cvf /tmp/mysql-snapshot.tar ./this_db

in client:
unpacking the archives

shell> cd /path/to/mysql/data/dir
shell> tar -xvf /tmp/mysql-snapshot.tar

Assuimng that you have the same data in master and client except maybe from the one you exclude. do this:
mysql > SHOW MASTER STATUS;

* make sure your server-id in my.cnf is different between master and client. by default server-id=1 in master and server-id=2 in client. if you have more than 1 client just increment that number. if you omit this the master can refuse any connection from client

* execute this
in client:
mysql> CHANGE MASTER TO
MASTER_HOST='master_host_name_or_master_IP',
MASTER_PORT =3306,
MASTER_USER='replication_user',
MASTER_PASSWORD='your_slave_user_password';

check your mysql error log, you should get similar to this

061101 10:26:46 [Note] Slave SQL thread initialized, starting replication in log 'FIRST' at position 0, relay log './development-relay-bin.000001' position: 4

Now you are replicating your master server into client server, CONGRATULATION! :)

Setting up replication with SSL

Now you should have your server talking to each other, exchanging data to each other. You wonder, if this connection is open to anyone to read then I really have huge hole in security. All password protection, firewall are useless.
So you want more secure connection between those to. Luckily mysql 5 have SSL build in. Basically all client connection to master will be encrypted, along the way. I am not saying that this is 100% secure, but this is adding the sense of security in your mind :) and for those security freaks.

I have found a good tutorial here http://www.option-c.com/xwiki/MySQL_Replication_with_SSL.
they pretty much lay out everything you need to know on how to add ssl for your replication.
I will just point several thing you don't want to miss

* Create your own Certification Authority (CA), if you have your certificate created by vendor, then ask for that vendor CA. if not you can do this in your master server

shell>cd /path/to/put/your/master-ssl/thingy
shell>openssl req -x509 -new -days 9999 -newkey rsa:2048 -nodes -keyout ca-key.pem -out ca-cert.pem

Fill out all the question with your information

Create a server certificate

Create the server certificate request
shell>openssl req -new -newkey rsa:2048 -nodes -keyout server-key.pem -out server-csr.pem

Remove the passphrase from the key
shell>openssl rsa -in server-key.pem -out server-key.pem

Sign this server request with the CA key to make a proper server certificate.
shell>openssl x509 -req -days 9999 -CA ca-cert.pem -CAkey ca-key.pem -CAcreateserial -CAserial ca-srl.txt -in server-csr.pem -out server-cert.pem

* make sure that your certificate files are not readable by others. I change permision to -600 for those files. Change the owner or the group of the file to mysql

* change the master's my.cnf and add these lines

[mysqld]
ssl-key=/path/to/put/your/master-ssl/thingy/server-key.pem
ssl-cert=/path/to/put/your/master-ssl/thingy/server-cert.pem
ssl-ca=/path/to/put/your/master-ssl/thingy/ca-cert.pem

* now go to client server. move the master's ca-cert.pem to client server. the CA certifificate of master server has to be the same as client server.

Create the client certificates

shell> cd /path/to/put/your/client-ssl/thingy/

Create the client certificate request
shell>openssl req -new -newkey rsa:2048 -nodes -keyout client-key.pem -out client-csr.pem

Remove a passphrase from the key
shell>openssl rsa -in client-key.pem -out client-key.pem

Sign this server request with the CA key to make a proper server certificate
shell>openssl x509 -req -days 9999 -CA ca-cert.pem -CAkey ca-key.pem -CAcreateserial -CAserial ca-srl.txt -in client-csr.pem -out client-cert.pem

*As always change the permission of those certificate to something more secure like 600 and change the ownership of the file to mysql.

* change the client my.cnf add these file

[client]
ssl-ca=$PATH/ca-cert.pem
ssl-key=$PATH/client-key.pem
ssl-cert=$PATH/client-cert.pem

don't forget this

[mysqld]
master-ssl
master-ssl-ca=/path/to/ca-certificate/ca-cert.pem
master-ssl-key=/path/to/client-key/client-key.pem
master-ssl-cert=/path/to/client-certificate/client-cert.pem

as you might come accross with error mention belows.

* Add user in master server to use SSL like I mention above.

* test the connection

shell>mysql --ssl -h master_host_name_or_master_IP -u secure_replication_user -p

Reff::
* delete master.info file in client
* start mysql client server
* do the following in client server

mysql>stop slave;
mysql> CHANGE MASTER TO
MASTER_HOST='master_host_name_or_master_IP',
MASTER_PORT =3306,
MASTER_USER='secure_replication_user',
MASTER_PASSWORD='your_slave_user_password',
MASTER_SSL=1;
mysql>start slave;

* if you ever change your certificates you have to redo Reff:: in client server and manke sure that you CA cert in client is the same with master's CA cert

Please add any commentif you find this usefull or you have addition to this

Addition:

I exclude the mysql table to replicate in client my.cnf
replicate-ignore-table = mysql.user
setting the replay in my.cnf client's
relay-log=development-relay-bin

error occur:

1. trying to connect to master server from slave server

shell>mysql --ssl -h master_host_server -u secure_replication_user_slave -p

ERROR 2026 (HY000): SSL connection error

try: check the date of the certificate. In my case the certificate was begin at 5 pm and I tried to connect at 2pm, so the server gave me this error. wait until the cert can be use. restart both Mysql Server (master and slave).

%>openssl x509 -in ca-cert.pem -dates -noout

since the error message is not realy helpful to debug the error, most likely this happend because of problem with your certificates. make sure slave CA cert is the same as the master ca cert.
Don't forget to put the certificates info in slave my.cnf

2. error account accessing master server

I found below error have 2 solution that you want to try. If you have mysql 4.0 maybe you have OLD_PASSWROD problem. Change the user password in master server so it is comply with mysql OLD_PASSWORD. if you have mysql 5 setup then maybe the answer below.

when you test the connection manually using

shell> mysql --ssl -h 10.1.2.43 -u sec_repl_user -p

the connection established and you are log in to master server but if you start the slave above error occur. This is happend because you don't have certificate information in master.info file.

the remedy:
make sure you have this line in your my.cnf

[client]
ssl-ca=/path/to/ca-certificate/ca-cert.pem
ssl-key=/path/to/client-key/client-key.pem
ssl-cert=/path/to/client-certificate/client-cert.pem

[mysqld]
master-ssl
master-ssl-ca=/path/to/ca-certificate/ca-cert.pem
master-ssl-key=/path/to/client-key/client-key.pem
master-ssl-cert=/path/to/client-certificate/client-cert.pem

the second part(mysqld) was not in my.cnf and I got the error.
you can also set the master-ssl directive inside CHANGE MASTER command in mysql.

so I think the first part let me in to master if I use command line, but the second part is needed for the replication slave
make sure you do this after restarting your mysql client server
- delete master.info file in client
- stop slave;
- do the CHANGE MASTER thing
- start slave;

3. Can not connect to master at all.

Make sure your network admin open port 3306 (or what ever port you use for mysql) in your network WAN or LAN firewall.

FIRST

Using Knoppix CD http://www.knoppix.net/

take the system offline by removing its ethernet connection and reboot the
system with a knoppix cd in it. remount the HD in read/write mode and edit
the /etc/passwd file. in it you will see the entry for root will read
something like
root:x:0:0:root,,,:/root:/bin/bash

remove the x from between the two :: an save the file. reboot the system and
log in as root, change the password as root now has no password. put system
back online after you have changed the root password to something secure

SECOND

Using GRUB

boot into single-user mode from GRUB, do the following from
the GRUB menu screen:

1. Select the desired kernel.

2. Press the 'e' key to edit that entry.

3. Use the arrow keys to navigate to the kernel line
(for example: kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.x-x ro root=/dev/hdx2)

4. Press the 'e' key to edit the line.

5. Add the argument 'single' to the end of the line and
press return.

6. Press the 'b' key to boot.

7. at promt type passwd

If you want to view hidden files in your remote server make sure that your remote server has SSH server running and you have access to use this. Once you are connected using SSH (change your connection type in site configuration), you will see hidden files.

Convert Access table to Mysql table

Although there are bunch of tools that you can buy to do this tasks, they will charge you some money for the tools. If you are in a very tight budget or just want to try it. there is several step that you have to do.

1. Convert all column type in access table into type text. This is just to be save. if you have date field make sure the format of that field is the same as the format in Mysql. if you have table which is too large to convert, you can create new table with the same column count and all column type is text then do query 'insert into table_name_new select * from table_name_old'. It will move all content from old table to new table.

2. Export your table using the export tool from access. File - Export. select the type of file to CSV or text.

3. Create Mysql table and make sure the column count is the same as the column count from the original access table.

4. Once you have the comma seperated value you can use Mysql Command to load the data into the Mysql table, do this command in mysql
LOAD DATA LOCAL INFILE "/data/data_dump/clientT.csv" INTO TABLE MIS_Client FIELDS TERMINATED BY "," ENCLOSED BY "\"" LINES TERMINATED BY "\r\n";
read: load data in file fullpath/filename into table_name_in_mysql with the field in one line terminated by comma and text field enclosed by double quote and the line terminated by \r\n character. if this is linux text file ussually using \n is enough. Windows end of line character is \r\n.

and lets mysql do its magic....

Strange things happened using SSH Secure Shell

I am using SSH client called SSH Secure Shell from www.ssh.com.

Server - linux
client - windows

When I upload file particularly file with '.txt' extension, SSH doing parsing and convert the new line character of windows ('\r\n') to new line character of Linux ('\n'). So when you upload txt file in this environment you will lost a few bites.
\r character is gone........ eaten by SSH Secure Client.

Maybe this is because I never see the manual or I am using a freeware....

I don't know whether to call this feature or what. but this makes me waste 3 hours of my time.... so hungry now :(((

This only happened with txt file. Since I do this on regular basis to upload comma seperated file into mysql database.

so when you do 'load data infile' command make sure try LINES TERMINATED BY '\r\n' and LINES TERMINATED BY '\n' in mysql.
if you have binary file viewer then you know what I mean.

\r\n = 0D0A

Build HTPC 2

Almost there.
After buying all the ingedients I found that IBM mother board can not be installed in the new coolermaster casing. This is because the pins from the case do not match the pins in the IBM mobo. So I run to buy mobo.

Now, all parts is in the house.

- installing all parts together in the case didn't take much time. connect the PC using component cable.
- power on and got the BIOS
- the fan from power suply and the 60mm case fan are noizyyyyyyyy, I'll replace them later
- Installing WXP Media center.
- Finish installing and boot up normaly
- Installing all needed software like DVD player, nero and codecs. I got them all for free when I bought dual layer DVDRW and I love it. the codecs are free download from http://www.divx.com/. But I personally like Nimo and FFdShow in a package

- First boot with XP in samsung TRX3079 dissapoint me. I thought using HDTV and PC setup I will see a clear and crispy text, but NOT in a million years. samsung TRX3079 is tube(analog) and what ever you have digital you will still see analog version but maybe sharpened. Although the text looks blurry but its readable.
Do not buy this TV if you are looking for crispy text out of you HTPC.

Trying music;
- with the current set up I use the sound card that integrated in the mobo. Cheap but its okay. too bad that it does not have digital out. but its okay. Music plays okay using logitech 5300 speaker. In my small apartment I have to keep the sound low since my neighbour has a baby :(. I will too soon :)
Thinking this will be my last project. when the baby born I don't think I have time for this. I will be video grapher and photographer and the main actor/actrees is my baby :)

- Music give no problem, but the the sound is average, got to get a real sound card for better result

trying video;
- Have a lot of anime and drama in the disk. playing those drava is a breezee, just double click and you are watching it from my samsung trx3079 clear and nice color. But you trys to play a comppressed real media file the picture is very very disappointing.
Compressed file are not mend to be watched from tube TV, if you have LCD/plasma screen then this is okay I guess.
- Put a VCD in DVDrom and it plays automatically using media player.
- Drama movie looks okay, but not as good as using samsung 950 DVD player using HDMI connection.
- I put DVD matrix and it told me I can not paly the DVD , its not recognized. hhhmmmmmm I flipped out. hhhhhhhhhhh ssssssssssssssss breath ... breath hhhhhhhh ....ssssss hhhhhhhh.....ssssssss.
Now after a few research it turn out the DVD has encrytpion in it and can not be played in a PC. and also because that the tv out port of my VGA card is enabled by default. I can not disable it. hhhmm the only way to watch dvd from this HTPC is using those region free and CSS fre dvd player and it cost you about $40. hhhhhhhhhh I guess I will stick with my DVD palyer for now. I hate those corporation who implement this DVD protection. I bought the DVD legally and I can not watch it in my type of player? Screw them, They don't event say it in the box that this particular dvd can not be played in PC. Maybe I can sue them or blockbuster....hhhmmmmm

- anyway problem solved. Watch DVD from my DVD player for now. when I have more money then I will definitely buy those region_CSS free DVD player.
- I will use this PC for my recorded drama and tons of anime :)

I wrote before how to install self singed certificate into your server. the process to create real certificate is almost the same. but after you create the CSR you send the CSR to your CA and they will send you CRT file that you can install in your server. once its install just restart the apache and you are good to go.

Choosing CA:

after several days researching CA I have a conclusion;
- Verisign is veri expensive but veri trusted. go with them if secutiry is no. 1 in your list.
- geotrust , cheap if you have a package from your ISP like 1and1 that offer $49 per year.
- network solution cheap , but they screw my account and I am leaving them
- digicert, is ok CA and they offer a very cheap wildcard certificate that cover 1 domain regardles the server or subdomain you have. this is a bargain for enterprise user.
- thawte, has been around for sometimes and cover a lot more countries than verisign. I set up secure servers in Afghanistan before with them and had no problem. As for US based CA they rejected my request since afghanistan is one of the banned country for doing business like selling cryptography. Sound ridiculous, since 90% of goverment in Afghanistan is build by US, but this is US law.

there is a lot more CA in the WWW but those what I am considering to have a big account with.

Other alternative is that you have your own CA server that will process any SSL request. If I am a central bank, I am going to this route. but it will cost you millions of dollars to have such server. Last time I check it will cost me US$25M. But you will be able to use this server to serve your employee(each has ones own cert) for login into your domain/AD, serve your offsite client (branch/local banks).

We setup Reuters client for one bank before and Reuters use this kind of server. So one client using 1 dedicated certificate.

The PC was originally from IBM netvista that I bought a year ago for $250, for linux server. It has 1GB of ram but I think 512 is enough for DVD viewing and recording. I am going to use the other 512MB for my bro machine :)

Start / stop mysql with cron

CRON job to shut down MySQL. To CRON the shutdown of MySQL without screen presence (i.e, "Press any key"), one has to follow these steps:

1. Start mysqld using this command:
mysqld_safe --autoclose
This will automatically close MySQL server screen after shutdown.

2. Shut down MySQL using this command:
mysqladmin -u root shutdown -a
This will automatically close the mysqladmin screen after shutdown is complete.

The mysqlhotcopy utility will back up only MyISAM tables. To back up InnoDB tables, shut down MySQL server using mysqladmin and take the normal file system backup MySQL data directory.

Installing php 5 in RHEL 4

The RHEL is fresh install with no php4 installed. only Apache 2 that come in the CD is installed. this is 32bit system, I have to try this at 64 bit system if anyone donate 64bit machine.
I couldn't get any rpm for RHEL get the php5 source RPM for CentOS 4.2. You'll find it in the centosplus directory on any of the CentOS mirror. I think this is the closest src for RHEL.

After I get the file what I will use the default src from the rpm and you must make sure that below package is installed. if not, install them first:

when its done all the rpm for RHEL is ready to install at

now you can install it with you favorite installer.

once it is done, edit php.ini;
make surre that;

extension_dir = /usr/lib/php/modules

and configure php.ini further to your preference of php.

add this line in /etc/httpd/conf/php.conf

LoadModule php5_module modules/libphp5.so

restart the apache and you should good to go.

in my case I have to re create the SSL cert and key. I am not sure why it changed after installing php? but I recreate them anyway and restart my apache.

tesing RHEL 4 + PHP 5 and MYSQL 5 with phpmyadmin.....

How to create a self-signed SSL Certificate in RHEL

Overview

The following is an extremely simplified view of how SSL is implemented and what part the certificate plays in the entire process.

Normal web traffic is sent unencrypted over the Internet. That is, anyone with access to the right tools can snoop all of that traffic. Obviously, this can lead to problems, especially where security and privacy is necessary, such as in credit card data and bank transactions. The Secure Socket Layer is used to encrypt the data stream between the web server and the web client (the browser).

SSL makes use of what is known as asymmetric cryptography, commonly referred to as public key cryptography (PKI). With public key cryptography, two keys are created, one public, one private. Anything encrypted with either key can only be decrypted with its corresponding key. Thus if a message or data stream were encrypted with the server's private key, it can be decrypted only using its corresponding public key, ensuring that the data only could have come from the server.

If SSL utilizes public key cryptography to encrypt the data stream traveling over the Internet, why is a certificate necessary? The technical answer to that question is that a certificate is not really necessary - the data is secure and cannot easily be decrypted by a third party. However, certificates do serve a crucial role in the communication process. The certificate, signed by a trusted Certificate Authority (CA), ensures that the certificate holder is really who he claims to be. Without a trusted signed certificate, your data may be encrypted, however, the party you are communicating with may not be whom you think. Without certificates, impersonation attacks would be much more common.

Step 1: Generate a Private Key

The openssl toolkit is used to generate an RSA Private Key and CSR (Certificate Signing Request). It can also be used to generate self-signed certificates which can be used for testing purposes or internal usage.

The first step is to create your RSA Private Key. This key is a 1024 bit RSA key which is encrypted using Triple-DES and stored in a PEM format so that it is readable as ASCII text.

Step 2: Generate a CSR (Certificate Signing Request)

Once the private key is generated a Certificate Signing Request can be generated. The CSR is then used in one of two ways. Ideally, the CSR will be sent to a Certificate Authority, such as Thawte or Verisign who will verify the identity of the requestor and issue a signed certificate. The second option is to self-sign the CSR, which will be demonstrated in the next section.

During the generation of the CSR, you will be prompted for several pieces of information. These are the X.509 attributes of the certificate. One of the prompts will be for "Common Name (e.g., YOUR name)". It is important that this field be filled in with the fully qualified domain name of the server to be protected by SSL. If the website to be protected will be https://public.akadia.com, then enter public.akadia.com at this prompt. The command to generate the CSR is as follows:

Step 3: Remove Passphrase from Key

One unfortunate side-effect of the pass-phrased private key is that Apache will ask for the pass-phrase each time the web server is started. Obviously this is not necessarily convenient as someone will not always be around to type in the pass-phrase, such as after a reboot or crash. mod_ssl includes the ability to use an external program in place of the built-in pass-phrase dialog, however, this is not necessarily the most secure option either. It is possible to remove the Triple-DES encryption from the key, thereby no longer needing to type in a pass-phrase. If the private key is no longer encrypted, it is critical that this file only be readable by the root user! If your system is ever compromised and a third party obtains your unencrypted private key, the corresponding certificate will need to be revoked. With that being said, use the following command to remove the pass-phrase from the key:

The newly created server.key file has no more passphrase in it.

Step 4: Generating a Self-Signed Certificate

At this point you will need to generate a self-signed certificate because you either don't plan on having your certificate signed by a CA, or you wish to test your new SSL implementation while the CA is signing your certificate. This temporary certificate will generate an error in the client browser to the effect that the signing certificate authority is unknown and not trusted.

To generate a temporary certificate which is good for 365 days, issue the following command:

openssl x509 -req -days 365 -in server.csr -signkey server.key -out server.crt

When Apache with mod_ssl is installed, it creates several directories in the Apache config directory. The location of this directory will differ depending on how Apache was compiled.

Installing Mysql 5 in RHEL 4 from RPMs

This is a fresh install of RHEL 4 with apache2 webserver that come with cd.

Get the RPM

install all package using RHEL package installer. Right click on the package and choose install package. if you did not get any dependency error then continue, if not please solve the dependency error by installing all required package.

what I do after this is go to prompt and type
root~>mysql

if you can get through the your installation is done. if not and get this error

ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

If your installing in a 2.6 kernel, either disable SELinux or set a new policy before trying to install MySQL-server. Without it the mysql_install_db and mysqld steps of the RPM will fail.

Here is the medicine if you forgot to do the above

you have to check the SELinux configuration. see http://forums.mysql.com/read.php?11,7164,7164

you can disable selinux for mysql so mysql will have no trouble starting up.
in RHEL go to

Application>system setting>security level configuration
click the SELinux tab
expand the SELinux Service Protection and check the 'Disable SELinux protection for mysqld daemon'
then click ok

try to restart the mysql.

if you still get this error
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

go to /var/lib/mysql, this is the default place where mysql install its data.
open mysql folder, if this folder is empty then you have to install the database file for mysql

run this
root~>/usr/bin/mysql_install_db

it should create the base tables for mysql and try to start your new mysql again.

In YaST and fire up MySQL as a running daemon. On the left of YaST, select System. Then in the right window, select Runlevel Editor. Then go down to mysql and click on the Enable button or whatever. It should pop up some sort of window to say that MySQL has been started. Then type this to make sure:

Finally I got Suse 10 downloaded and installed. the only reason I want to upgrade from version 9.2 is that this version has ktorrent build in :) I love it.

I intend to make this server for web, ftp, ssh, download, mysql and test bed server.
using 500MHZ dell machine with 512mb of ram. Will be upgraded as needed. I NEED MORE HDD SPACE. anybody want to donate used HDD more than 20GB?:)

Current setting I am using 10GB of HDD. I have another 6GB but I will put this later when the installation is ok. I just want to see how easy it is to add HDD in SUSE 10

Installation note:
- everything is straight forward installation just like 9.2 version. I pick what ever package I need for the services and just after everything is installed it will ask you to run auto update, skip this. instead run update after rebooting.
- Make sure you run update after it reboot from last installation process. I found that some how the kernel download give you problem, if you download that during the installation process

Meanwhile, I google why in the hell I can not ping thos server. Apparently, its because I don't have DNS, I did not get DNS set up with auto configuration from SUSE 10.&@$! &@$! &@$!

Now the problem could be. You are out of HDD space and lazy to do reinstalation of the OS. So what you do is buy a new hard drive, bigger one of course and copy your existing hard drive to the new one. but then its not as easy as select all and drag all the content of old hard drive to the new one using window explorer. IT WON"T WORK!!!!

solution:
1. buy a norton ghost, make an image and deploy your old drive image into the new one.
2. get this G4U at no cost (donation to the author is welcome:), copy your hardrive into the new hardrive using this tools and you will have everything transfered in to time(depend on how big is your old drive).
want more? this toools can also put your hardrive image in FTP server so anytime you ruin your partition just out the whole new OS inside your drive again. Feel like FRESH drive :)

1. What is it?

g4u ("ghost for unix") is a NetBSD-based bootfloppy/CD-ROM that allows easy cloning of PC harddisks to deploy a common setup on a number of PCs using FTP. The floppy/CD offers two functions. The first is to upload the compressed image of a local harddisk to a FTP server, the other is to restore that image via FTP, uncompress it and write it back to disk. Network configuration is fetched via DHCP. As the harddisk is processed as an image, any filesystem and operating system can be deployed using g4u. Easy cloning of local disks as well as partitions is also supported.

2. Why not one of the alternatives?

o Server-part often runs (only) under DOS/Windows. I wanted to use a Unix based server.
o Supported filesystems include everything from Microsoft, but others are not handled properly (Solaris/x86, NetBSD, ...)
o I don't want to deal (ever again) with making a DOS-based bootfloppy, that gets its IP-number via DHCP.
o I've played with doing multicast-based deployment based on imm, but the result was so slow I decided not to persue it.

3. Requirements & Download

o Two empty 1.44MB floppy disks, or an empty CD-R/RW
o A FTP-server with some GB free space
o A DHCP-server

In addition to that, you may want:

o The g4u 2.1 floppy images (zipped/ uncompressed floppy one and floppy two))

4. Using it

4.1 Preparations
o Using the g4u floppy images:
1. Download the two floppy images, g4u-2.1-1.fs and g4u-2.1-2.fs or g4u-2.1.fs.zip, which contains these two files.
2. If you downloaded the g4u-2.1.fs.zip file, unpack it to get g4u-2.1-1.fs and g4u-2.1-2.fs
3. Write the two images to two seperate floppy disk. Under Unix, a simple "cat g4u-2.1-1.fs >/dev/diskette" (and same for -2.fs) will do. Make yourself familiar with the name of your floppy device, some common ones are:

+ NetBSD: /dev/fd0a
+ Solaris: /dev/diskette
+ Linux: /dev/fd0

There are also similar devices for USB sticks, but you need to grab the g4u.fs from the ISO to put there:

+ NetBSD: /dev/sd0d
+ Linux: /dev/sd0

If you're using DOS, use rawrite.exe. There's also a Windows-based program available called rawr32.zip.
o Using the g4u CDROM ISO image:
1. Download the CDROM ISO image, g4u-2.1.iso or g4u-2.1.iso.zip
2. If you downloaded the g4u-2.1.iso.zip file, unpack it to get g4u-2.1.iso
3. Please consult your CDROM writing software (Nero, DiskJuggler, WinOnCD, cdrecord, ...) 's manual on how to write the g4u.iso file to a CDROM. Note that the image is bootable.

o On a FTP server of your choice, create an user-account called "install", and protect it with some password. Make sure the 'install' user can login via ftp (/etc/shells...)

If you want to use a different account, you can specify "login@server" for slurpdisk, uploaddisk etc..
o Make sure you have a working DHCP server that hands out IP addresses and other data needed to access the FTP server from your workstation (name server, netmask, default gateway). Else you will have to set the IP-number manually..

4.2 Image creation
o Boot the CD or floppy on the machine you want to clone. See it read the kernel from disk, then print out all the devices found in the machine. It will do DHCP next, asking for an IP number - be sure you have DHCP configured properly! At the end you'll get a text description of possible commands, and a shell prompt.

o Whole harddisk:
Type "uploaddisk your.ftp.server.com filename.gz" to read out the machine's harddisk (rwd0d), and put it into the "install" account of your FTP server under the given filename. The disk image is compressed (with gzip -9), so maybe use a ".gz" file suffix. You don't have to, though. Before putting the file on the FTP server, the "install" account's password is requested.

If you want to clone your second IDE disk, add it's name on the uploaddisk command line: "uploaddisk your.ftp.server.com filename.gz wd1". Similarly, if you use SCSI instead of IDE disks, use "uploaddisk your.ftp.server.com filename.gz sd0".

If you want to use a different account name than "install", use "account@your.ftp.server.com" for both uploaddisk and slurpdisk.

o One partition only:
Get an overview of disks recognized by g4u by typing "disks", a list of partitions on a certain disk is available via "parts disk", where disk is one of the disks printed by "parts", e.g. wd0, wd1, sd0, etc. Partitions are numbered with letters starting from 'a', where partitions a-d are usually predefined, with your partitions starting at 'e'. Partitions here are BSD-partitions, which have little in common with DOS MBR partitions. To specify a partition, use something like "wd0e" or "sd0f": "uploadpart your.ftp.server.com filename.gz wd0e". Run "uploadpart" without arguments for more examples.

o Wait until you're back at the shell prompt (ignore the errors :-). Depending on your network, CPU, harddisk hardware and contents, image creation can take several hours!
o You can switch off the machine now. Type "halt" or simply press reset/power button - there are no filesystems mounted so no harm will result.
o Check that your FTP server's "install" account now has the image file.

4.3 Image deployment
o Boot the CD or floppy to the shell prompt again, see above.

o Whole harddisk:
Type "slurpdisk your.ftp.server.com filename.gz". This will log into the FTP server's "install" account, verify the password, then retrieve the image, uncompress it and write it back to /dev/rwd0d.

If you want to restore to a SCSI disk, add the disk's name to the slurpdisk command line, e.g. "slurpdisk your.ftp.server.com filename.gz sd0".

See above if you want to use an account name other than "install".
o One partition:
Use "slurppart your.ftp.server.com filename.gz wd0e" or whatever values you passed to uploadpart. Please note that the partition information is taken from your MBR, which is expected to be the same as before image creation - expect surprises if you change something between image creation and deployment. In case of inevitable changes, check the start sector and size values given by "parts". For an image that includes the MBR, do a full backup with "uploaddisk".

o Reboot the machine (type "reboot" or press reset button), and see if your machine comes up as expected - it should!

4.4 Copying a disk locally
If you just want to copy one local disk to another one with no network & server involved, the "copydisk" command is what you want. E.g. to copy the first IDE disk to the second IDE disk, use "copydisk wd0 wd1", to do the same for SCSI disks run "copydisk sd0 sd1".

Beware! All data on the target disk will be erased!

A list of disks as found during system startup can be found using the "disks" command.

4.5 Copying a partition locally
If you want to only copy one local partition to another local partition (similar to what 'uploadpart' and 'slurppart' do, just without the network and FTP in between), this can be done with the 'copypart' command. It takes two partition names as arguments, and copies the contents of one partition to the other. As an example if you found you want to copy your first local partition 'wd0e' to the second one 'wd0f', run:

copypart wd0e wd0f

A list of disks can be found using the 'disk' command, to list all the partitions on a disk use the 'parts' command. Partitions have the form of "wd0d", "w1e", "sd1f".

Be aware that the partitions to copy should have identical size (down to the sector), else funny things will happen. When copying a 'big' partition into a 'small' one, g4u won't thrash the data behind the 'small' partition, but of course the copy is not complete either. Take special note that that case could happen when you restore a copy made that way, and which went fine when you first copied your small working partition to your big backup partition!

5. FAQs and hints on disk cloning

5.1 Supported filesystems
One of the questions arising a lot is "what filesystems does g4u support". The answer is: "all of them". g4u reads the disk bit by bit, starting from byte #0 to the end. It includes any MBR, boot record, partition table and the partitions themselves without further investigating the structure of the data stored in these partitions.

5.2 Supported Operating Systems
The question on operating systems that can be deployed with g4u is the same as for the filesystems: any. Given the image-approach again, g4u is able to handle any operating system. Systems that were cloned successfully include NetBSD, Linux, Novell Netware 4.11 and 5.1, Solaris/x86, Windows NT, 2000 and XP.

By moving the harddisks to a PC, g4u can even be used to deploy operating systems for non-PC based SCSI machines running HP-UX, Irix, Solaris, AIX etc.

5.3 Supported Hardware
The system running g4u itself can have IDE, SATA, SCSI or RAID disks with various controllers (Adaptec, ...) as well as wide range of PCMCIA, Cardbus, ISA and PCI network cards. Please see the g4u kernel config for the full list of supported hardware.

If you're unsure if your hardware is supported, simply boot g4u and see if your network card gets listed by "ifconfig -a" and if your disks get listed by the "disks" command. If not, adding relevant parts of "dmesg" output (from g4u; press space bar to scroll down) is required for analysis if you ask for help. See "Reporting problems" for more information.

5.4 A word on disk sizes
The question how g4u deals with different disk sizes arises a lot too. The general answer is, g4u works best with identical disk sizes & geometry. Putting an image from a small disk on a big disk works, putting an image from a big disk to a small disk is likely to cause problems.

If you cannot avoid preparing an image on a big disk that'll get deployed to a small disk later, make sure the "extra" space is not occupied by a active partition or filesystem, else data loss is very likely to occur!

If you intend to deploy a "small" image to a "big" disk, the extra space that's not covered by g4u can be used for creating a partition and a filesystem. You will have to do that on your own, e.g. using your operating systems' post installation steps.

5.5 Changing compression level
Per default, images uploaded to the FTP server are compressed with "gzip -9". This saves as much disk space as possible, but also takes a long time - several hours are not uncommon. You can reduce the gzip level for "uploaddisk" by setting the GZIP environment variable:

# GZIP=-1 uploaddisk your.ftp.server.com filename.gz

You can change compression levels between 1 (fast, little compression) and 9 (slow, maximum compression). Of course you can specify all the usual options to uploaddisk.

5.6 List of recognized disks
During startup of g4u, all devices recognized are listed, but very fast. To get a list of recognized disks, use the 'disks' command:

The above example shows a 6GB IDE harddisk.

5.7 Problems with images at 2GB
Do you experience g4u aborting file transfers after the image has grown to 2 GB on the FTP server? The problem here is not g4u, but most likely your FTP server. Some older Linux distributions are known to only allow files of up to 2GB filesize, and even if there is a Linux 2.4 kernel running, that's no guarantee for a properly working server. Make sure that your ftp daemon is upto date, or install a decent operating system.

So far, whatever FTP server comes with NetBSD, Solaris and Windows 2000 has been used without problems.

5.8 Can you add feature XXX?
I got requests for adding many features to g4u:

+ using TFTP
+ using SSH/scp
+ using NFS
+ adding a X or curses based GUI
+ writing images to CDROM / deployment from CDROM
+ bzip2 compression

After moving two a two-floppy set for g4u, some of these features may be added in the future, while others (X...) are not likely. Stay tuned!

5.9 Problems with network performance
If upload performance is weak (less than 5MBytes/sec on a 100BaseT Ethernet switch) even with a small compression level or a fast CPU and the harddisk is idle this means the network sucks. A common problem in switched Ethernet is a duplex mismatch between the NIC and the switch. In NetBSD, the default is to negotiate speed and duplex automatically. Other settings can be set manually.

Enforcing 100BaseTX/Full-duplex:

# ifconfig fxp0 media 100BaseTX mediaopt Full-duplex
# ifconfig -a
fxp0: flags=[...]
media: Ethernet 100baseTX full-duplex

Using autonegotiation (default):

# ifconfig fxp0 media auto
# ifconfig -a
fxp0: flags=[...]
media: Ethernet autoselect (100baseTX)

5.10 Reducing the image size
People complain that the image resulting from g4u is very big. This is normal as g4u clones the whole disks with all blocks, not attributing if they contain any valid data or if they are empty/unused. To find empty/unused blocks (and not clone them), g4u would need intimate understanding of the contained filesystem, which is different again for each filesystem - Windows FAT, Linux Ext2/3/ReiserFS/..., BSD FFS, Solaris UFS, etc. Given both tight space limitations on the floppy as well as shortage on filesystem documentation and implementations available, teaching g4u to ignore empty blocks is not likely to happen.

But there is an easy way to circumvent the problem: use the native operating system's understanding (and implementation) of the filesystem, and make sure it prepares empty/unused blocks in a way so they don't contain random garbage data but values which can be compressed easily by g4u, thus resulting in small image sizes.

Effectively, you just fill up the disk's unused blocks with zero-bytes. Open file for writing, stuff in 0-bytes until the disk is full, then close the file and remove it. The result is that all unused blocks were used by the file, and filled with data that g4u can then compress easily. Usually the operating system will just mark the blocks as unused, without changing the actual data content.

Using this technique on a 20GB disk that had 6GB Solaris 8/x86 and the rest Windows 2000 Workstation shrunk the image from ~6GB compressed to ~2GB compressed. You can probably imagine the effect of this on deployment time too. :)

To perform the filling of unused data blocks with zero-bytes, there are several ways, depending on what operating system you use on your computer, and what software you have available:

Standard Unix:
This works on any Unix variant - Linux, NetBSD, Solaris, etc.:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/0bits bs=20971520 # bs=20m
rm /0bits

Windows Perl solution:
This one needs perl installed. In a command shell, type:

cd /d c: c:\win-preclone.pl c:

This freeware program can erase your disk in a safe way, but it can also be told to just write a pattern of all-0-bits to the disk. Grab it at www.heidi.ie/eraser. Thanks to Stephen Krans [s040 at krans dot org] for the hint!

Windows "onboard" solution:
Aparently Windows XP comes with a tool to do some harddisk encryption that can also be used to write 0-bytes to the disk. To do so, run the following command: cipher /W:C: for drive C:. You will need to abort (Control+C) after the first round, else it will write random data after filling the disk nicely with 0-bytes.

Run any of these right before shutting down the operating system to create an image with g4u, and see the size difference.

5.11 Setting IP-number manually
Sometimes you may not want or be able to use DHCP. In that case doing the network configuration manually is possible with g4u, too:

1. Find out if your network device is recognized, and by what name, using the command

ifconfig -a

Your network device is something like "ex0", "tlp0", etc. (Note that unlike in Linux, NetBSD doesn't call all ethernet cards "eth0"!)

2. Next configure the network device's IP number and netmask. It is assumed that your network device is xx0 here, and that the machine should run with IP number 1.2.3.4 and netmask 255.255.255.0:

ifconfig xx0 1.2.3.4 netmask 255.255.255.0

3. Last, you may want to make the default router known unless your FTP server is in the same IP subnet as the machine you want to use g4u on. Let's say the default router's IP address is 2.3.4.5, then the command to enter is:

route add default 2.3.4.5

That's all - simple, huh? Just remember that g4u is still Unix! After these steps, you should be able to use g4u just as if it used DHCP.

5.12 Extracting the g4u kernel
I've been asked how to boot g4u from harddisk (using e.g. grub). The idea is to extract the kernel from the boot floppy, and hand that to grub (or whatever bootloader you want - maybe use PXE to netboot g4u). Here's how to extract the kernel, named "netbsd":

In order to netboot g4u via PXE, you first need to extract the kernel from the g4u floppies, and then follow the steps that describe a netboot (diskless boot) of NetBSD/i386, see the NetBSD documentation for various ways to do this.

+ What exact command(s) did you use
+ What exact output did you get (all of it, 1:1, no interpretation on your own)?
+ If the system hangs during boot: what are the last three lines printed on the screen (again all three of them, verbatime)
+ What does "disks" say? "parts"?
+ If you have some problems with some network card or disk driver, please include the relevant parts from "dmesg" output (scroll down with 'space')
+ What operating system, filesystem type and FTP server software do you use on your FTP server?

7. Rebuilding from source

G4u is based on NetBSD boot floppy disk set. It consists of a custom kernel and custom bootfloppy, both stripped down to an absolute minimum to fit on two 1.44MB floppy disk or a CDROM. There are also the "copydisk", "uploaddisk" and "slurpdisk" scripts.

To rebuild the images:
o Note that for rebuilding, no root permissions are needed any more! Below, the "#" prompt shows action needed as root, "%" is the prompt for commands executed as user.

o Get a i386/PC machine running NetBSD 2.0. Cross-building from other Unix-like operating systems may work too, but is untested as far as g4u is concerned.

o Install mkisofs (part of the cdrecord package), e.g. either as precompiled binary:

# PKG_PATH=ftp://ftp.NetBSD.org/pub/NetBSD/packages/2.0/i386/All
# export PKG_PATH
# pkg_add -v cdrecord

or, if you have pkgsrc installed:

Just doing this now, so I might as well write it up.

In my case I have a 400Gb disk to add as secondary master. I want this to mount at boot as /share2 and I'll only have one partition on the disk.

So.....

Step 1: Hardware installation

Shutdown the machine.
Add the disk as normal (in hardware terms)
Update BIOS and make sure the machine sees the disk.
Reboot the machine.

The first thing you'll notice is that Fedora does not prompt you that a new disk has been added. Kudzu, the tool which checks for hardware changes, ignores HDDs. So we'll have to do it manually. Trust me, it doesn't take long.

Open a shell and su to root.

Step 2: Create the partition on the disk

Type in the command as follows. Replace my device name /dev/hdc with yours as appropriate. Linux labels IDE hard drives as follows:

Primary master = /dev/hda
Primary slave = /dev/hdb
Secondary master = /dev/hdc
Secondary slave = /dev/hdd

if you use SCSI drive the name of your drive is like /dev/sda or /dev/sdb

So in my case the drive is /dev/hdc and so the command is:

fdisk /dev/hdc

if you are installing a large disk you will receive warnings - ignore them.

You are now within fdisk so to create a partition type in

n (new partition)
p (primary partition)
1 (partition number 1)
(take default start cylinder in my case 1)
(take default end cylinder in my case 48641)
w (rewrite partition table to the disk)

the last command will also exit fdisk

Step 3: Format the partition

OK I have my partition but it is not formatted. The command to do this in my case is

mkfs.ext3 -L /share2 /dev/hdc1

mkfs.ext3 actually creates the partition.
-L /share2 is the label of the partition, I normally label mine to match the mount point, keeps things cleaner.
/dev/hdc1 - notice the change? Not using /dev/hdc any more. That's because I'm formatting a partition, not a disk. /dev/hdc1 is, logically, the first partition on the secondary master drive /dev/hdc. Simple :)

This command will just run, give you a few facts and figures, then exit. Congrats! We're formatted!

Step 4: Create a mount point and change the system to mount automatically

Linux partitions are mounted on directories, so we need to create the directory entry before we can mount. In my case I want to mount this new drive on /share2, so the command is:

mkdir /share2

That's the mount point taken care of.
Now I want to make sure the machine mounts the partition at reboot, so I need to edit the file systems table, /etc/fstab. I use vi, if you have a preferred text editor use it.

I added a line to /etc/fstab as follows:

LABEL=/share2 /share2 ext3 defaults 1 2

Translation:

LABEL=/share2 - filesystem labelled /share2 - see step 3 - now perhaps you see why I label to match mount points
/share2 - mount on directory /share2
ext3 - the filesystem type
defaults - use default permission handling
1 2 - "1" =- available to the Linux dump command ( a backup utility), "2" - fsck behaviour, normally a value of "1" is used for boot filesystems and "2" for all others.

That's it! Reboot and enjoy all those extra bytes :)

Taking your desktop virtual with VNC

Introduction

Every day when I finish work, I switch off my desktop computer. When I switch it on again the following morning, I can carry on where I left off. I switch on the computer, and all of my application windows are exactly where I left them. The web browser is still showing me the webpage I was half-way through reading. How? I use Virtual Network Computing: VNC.

My desktop session actually runs on another machine in another building. The desktop computer I sit in front of runs a VNC viewer and shows me my desktop—but the applications in that desktop are running inside a VNC server session.

Applications of VNC

There are several different problems that can be solved by using VNC. The reason I use it is so that I can have a persistent desktop as previously described. This is one of the most common reasons for using VNC. One computer runs a VNC server, which is a type of virtual frame buffer: it manages a screen image (a two-dimensional array of pixels), but does not display it directly on a screen. Another computer runs a VNC viewer, which acts as a client and takes the frame buffer image from the VNC server and displays it on a real screen. With VNC providing a persistent desktop, I do not need to log in or log out, but instead I just resume my session from where I left off last time by running a VNC viewer application.

VNC servers and viewers are available for a variety of operating systems. Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® 4 includes the server and two viewers: a Java version as well as the native application. The VNC server can be configured to provide the Java viewer over HTTP, so you can use any Java-enabled web browser on any operating system as a VNC viewer.

The design of VNC places few demands on the VNC viewer. Most of the work is done by the server. As a result of this, it is a well-placed technology for making thin client systems (where a number of diskless machines provide graphical interfaces to a single powerful server). Thin clients need only run the VNC viewer whereas the applications can reside on the server.

One type of thin client is an X terminal: a dedicated machine that runs the X Window System and is connected to a network. In general, these machines are configured to connect to a server which then displays a login window. The X terminal displays the graphics from the server using the X Window System protocol.

A VNC viewer can act like a software X terminal, with a VNC server providing the login window. The advantage of using VNC for this is that the login session will stay there even when the user disconnects the VNC viewer, moves to another room or building, then reconnects. The session only finishes when the user logs out; afterwards, connecting with a VNC viewer will show a login window again.

Another use for VNC is to remotely control or view a display. Several methods for doing this are included with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4. The easiest to use is the Remote Desktop entry in the Main Menu -> Preferences menu. To allow your session to be viewed or controlled, click the check buttons labeled Allow other users to view your desktop and Allow other users to control your desktop. In this dialog box you can also set a password for VNC access and ask require when a VNC viewer connects as shown in Figure 1. Remote desktop.

A less easy but more efficient way of achieving the same effect is to use the VNC loadable module for the X Window System. Instructions for setting this up can be found at the RealVNC website. Using this module, even when no one is logged in, the login window on the screen can be viewed and controlled remotely.

With Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, VNC can make life easier even while you install the operating system! You probably already know that unattended automatic installations are possible using the kickstart feature, with the installation options and package selections being set out in advance in a kickstart file. You may not know that you can have interactive control of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux installation procedure even when the machine being installed is physically remote from you, perhaps even in another country.

The installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux machine can be told to act as a VNC server from the very beginning of the installation. Very briefly, the way to do this is to boot using PXE (or any similar method), passing the command line linux ks vnc to the installer (links to documentation about PXE network installations can be found in the section called “Further reading”). Provide a minimal kickstart file using DHCP, which just sets the location of the installation directory—perhaps an NFS server. When the installer starts you will be able to start a VNC viewer and connect to the IP address of the machine.

Setting up a persistent desktop

Here is a description of the steps to take when setting up a persistent desktop using VNC in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.

The first thing to do is set a password for the VNC server. To do this, log in as normal and run the command vncpasswd from a shell prompt. The VNC service will not start unless you have set a password.

Next, become root using su - and edit the /etc/sysconfig/vncservers file. To set up two persistent desktop sessions, one for fred and one for joe (who prefers a larger display size than fred), it should look like Example 1. /etc/sysconfig/vncservers example.

Example 1./etc/sysconfig/vncservers example

To start all VNC persistent desktops at boot, enable the VNC service with chkconfig vncserver on (as root). Then, to start the VNC persistent desktops now, type service vncserver start. Both users will be able to connect VNC viewers, fred to display number 1 and joe to display number 2.

The default desktop session in VNC is a very simple one, using the twm window manager. You might prefer the VNC desktop session to look and behave the same as the login session you would normally see. To do that, edit the file /home/username/.vnc/xstartup and remove the # from the beginning of the two lines that follow the line reading Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop.

Using a VNC viewer

Whether you use the Java VNC viewer or a native VNC viewer on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, Microsoft® Windows®, or any other platform, the procedure is broadly the same. On Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 the application can be found in the menu as Main Menu -> Accessories -> VNC Viewer.

A dialog box will appear asking for a VNC server to connect to, and an Options... button allows you to configure certain things about how the VNC viewer will operate.

The VNC server is identified by a hostname (or IP address) and a display number. If the /etc/sysconfig/vncservers file in Example 1. /etc/sysconfig/vncservers example was on a machine named hoopoe.elk, the VNC server for joe's session would be hoopoe.elk:2.

The VNC display number is not an IP port number even though the hostname:number syntax is used for specifying port numbers in a web browser. To make matters slightly more confusing, the Java VNC viewer is accessed in this way when using a web browser by specifying a port number! The port number for the Java VNC viewer is the display number plus 5800. For example, to get to joe's VNC session using a web browser the URL would be http://hoopoe.elk:5802/.

If a password is set on the VNC server, the VNC viewer prompts you for it. Next, the VNC viewer window appears containing the desktop session (see Figure 2. VNC Viewer window). Closing the VNC viewer window does not terminate the desktop session.

To adjust connections settings, press F8 for the menu (refer to Figure 3. VNC Viewer menu. Running a VNC viewer in Full screen mode allows it to catch key combinations that would normally be intercepted by the window manager, for example Alt-Tab to switch between windows. In Full screen mode, this switches between windows in the VNC session, not between the VNC viewer window and other windows on the local session.

Pressing F8 brings up the VNC menu, but if you want an application running in the VNC session to get the keypress instead of the VNC viewer, select Send F8 from the VNC menu.

Quick steps

Here is a quick recap of the steps needed to set up a persistent desktop using VNC on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.

Set a password using vncpasswd
Edit /etc/sysconfig/vncservers
Enable the service with chkconfig vncserver on
Start the service with service vncserver start

Cause: Suse by default turn off the SSH password authentication in version 9.3

We are assuming that you just want a SSL encrypted connection with a non-official Certificate (Non-Authorative). So follow the following steps:

Turn apache2 off first by executing: /etc/rc.d/apache2 stop
Generate a "fake" certificate using the following command: /usr/bin/gensslcert -c CA -s ON -l "Your_city" -o "Your_organization" -e your_name@your_isp.com -d -n FQDN Where:

-C Common name "$name"
-N comment "$comment"
-c country (two letters, e.g. DE) $C
-s state $ST
-l city $L
-o organisation "$O"
-u organisational unit "$U"
-n fully qualified domain name $CN ($FQHOSTNAME)

This will generate the necessary certs in the right directory.
In /etc/sysconfig/apache2 make sure you have "ssl" under APACHE_MODULES. (ie: APACHE_MODULES="access actions alias auth auth_dbm autoindex cgi dir env expires include log_config mime negotiation setenvif status suexec userdir ssl").
In the same file also add (check) the SSL flag (ie: APACHE_SERVER_FLAGS="-D SSL") and increase the timeout value (ie: APACHE_START_TIMEOUT="5").
Save the file
In /etc/apache2/vhosts.d directory do the following:

cp vhost-ssl.template vhost-ssl.conf

edit vhost-ssl.conf in /etc/apache2/vhosts.d and make sure the following are in place and uncommented:

ServerName FQDN (The FQDN has to match the cert exactly).
ServerAdmin your@email.address (The Email address has to match the cert).

Do a dry test run with this command to make sure everything is in place using the following command:

httpd2 -D SSL -S

If you get no error and Sysntax is okay continue, if not you did something wrong :-)
Restart the server with /etc/rc.d/apache2 start

If everything is okay (which it should be) you can now use https instead of http to get the secure version of your site.

thats it. now you can use the password protected directory.
to remove user, open this file /my/user/file/info/.htpasswd
and delete the line with username in it.

Problems:
1. Can not login , pop up windows asking the user and password again and again

solution:
check the apache error log

1. Make sure the group file and the user file is readable by others by doign the chmod above
2. Make sure you are referring to the correct userfile and group file in .htaccess
3. if you got below error or similar:

1. put he user file and groupfile out side the web folder but still under apache folder , so can not be browsed from browser (i.e. /user/local/apache2/cgi-bin/.htpasswd)
2. protect the the password and group file against it self using .htaccess
3. Using SSL will add more security since the username and password for this type of authentication is wide open to the public.

Memang benar jika ingin perbaikan dimulai harus dari diri sendiri. Secuil pikiran saja yang menyangkal ini bisa menjadi benih ketidak behasilan. Mungkin hidup di dunia ini harus dimulai dengan syukur. kalo di mulai dengan ketidak puasan maka yah seperti ini lah jadinya.
Manusia berhati hewan, dan lebih parah lagi. Hampir semua manusia indonesia ternyata sudah mulai belajar jadi debus atau mungkin ini ilmu turunan yah. Mendarah daging dan di turunkan melalui sekolah2 pengalaman di lapangan.

Terutama para pati, entah kenapa mereka jadi sakti mandraguna. Bisa makan beton, bisa makan aspal, minum bensin, minum solar, minum oli dan tidak mati, bisa menghilang, bahkan bisa sihir. Tadi dilihat ada, sekejap bisa mensulap jadi tidak ada. Hebat memang manusia2 Indonesia.

Manusia yang masih bodoh, tidak melihat alam, tidak pernah belajar dari alam dan tidak mau belajar juga. Masih mending hewan yang bisa kapok. Tapi manusia tidak bisa kapok. Dengan memelintirkan pikiran2 yang muluk2 lalu mereka merayu pikiran2 mereka sendiri bahwa ini semua demi kepentingan manusia banyak.

This is actulally a dump way to load data, no checking, no parsing, nothing... but hey if you want just to take look at whats in there here you go. if you have column type date, Mysql will not take the date format like this MM/DD/YYYY, it will just put the thing like 0000-00-00. Import Unicode CSV files to MySQL

Unicode UTF-8 comma-separated values (CSV) text files, which are exported or generated by such applications as Microsoft Access or Excel, can be imported to MySQL via LOAD DATA INFILE command. CSV data files that are in a Vietnamese legacy encoding should first be converted to Unicode UTF-8, using UnicodeConverter tool, before proceeding with the import.

Make sure that MySQL default charset is utf8. You may need to create the schema (i.e., database structure and tables) before executing the LOAD DATA command. This can be accomplished manually or by MySQL Migration Toolkit to re-create the schema in MySQL database and then use TRUNCATE command to clear the table (delete all rows) before importing. For example:

mysql> TRUNCATE TABLE Ngarang; (better in my opinion, it will reset the auto increment field)

mysql> DELETE FROM Ngarang;

The import will be executed as follows:

mysql> LOAD DATA LOCAL INFILE 'Ngarang.txt' INTO TABLE Ngarang FIELDS TERMINATED BY ',' ENCLOSED BY '"' LINES TERMINATED BY '\r\n';

Hari ini aku belajar lagi dari manusia kecil itu..

Aku masih punya hati.. bersyukur... bersyukur....

mencintai manusia yang lain tanpa pamrih... ikhlas...
coba pikir... uang receh yang kamu kantongi tiap hari itu cuman menuh2in kantong kamu tanpa kamu ada keinginan untuk memberikan kepada si miskin.. padahal di dompet tuh lembaran2 puluh ribu numpuk.... hhhhh jangan pelit deh ( aku juga mengingatkan manusia aku juga)

Hahhahahaaa ternyata manusia jenis cowo itu egois dan sok tahu. Gara2 itu jadilah salah paham.
Maaf yah sama yang udah kena jadi korban......

tapi memang Hatinya cowo itu kayak kaca abis ujan di jakarta, butek. nanti kalo udah di bersihin baru deh dia mencerling lagi. Yah ribuan kata maaf sih ngggak bakal abis walaupun air liur udah ngabisin bergalon2.

Hari ini ternyata terasa kalo long distance relationship itu nggak gampang. apa lagi untuk orang kayak gua yang kali baru mulai. Tapi kesabaran masih belum tembus kok.

SMS tidak lah sedependable yang orang kira. Atau providernya yang nggak dependable. 'Message sent' yang di kirim oleh provider itu bukan berarti message delivered by receiver. tapi yang itu yang gua kira. Eh ternyata bukan.

Yah maafin aku deh namanya juga nggak tahu. aku kan cuma usaha.

hhmm kali ganti telp yah, hhhhmmm maunya sih nggak keluar duit lagi, tapi kayaknya harus kluar. php cli and cgi is different beast.. WAAACCKKK

This is for fedora, not sure if works for other..
when I install new server with fedora core 3 I found out that php that come with the package is a modoule to apache, which is cgi. After foundling for so long then I found out that I have to install cli seperately, maybe there is a better way. but I have no time to think about this. Development is waiting.... ARRRGGGHHHHHHH.

I need CLI to run php from cron (another nice beast)...

then configure

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/php-cli --disable-cgi

then build

make

then install

ls

then switch to path where eZ is installed (e.g. cd /var/www/html/ez)

cd /path/to/ez

then run

/usr/local/php-cli/bin/php runcronjobs.php
